A Day in the Life -- Caregiver Series

It’s 5.45am and Louise Bell’s* day has begun. In reality, it began around 4am when she was awoken by a piercing alarm warning her that her daughter Tegan’s sugars were dropping to a dangerous level. That wasn’t the first time Louise was up that night. Tegan typically gets up and roams the house around midnight, and will often have at least one screaming fit between dusk and dawn. It's exhausting and it requires being "always-on," but for parents of children with special needs, this is a part of every-day life.

Most of us reach the tipping point at some time in our lives: the moment when we go from being looked after by our parents to realizing the tables have turned and it’s our time to take care of them.

Medication management. That might not be something you think about in your day-to-day life. I know I didn’t, until about five years ago. Things were going well for me: I was growing Brainchild - my personal holding company. I had seeded some great companies like Warby Parker, Sweetgreen and ClassPass, and I was enjoying my early thirties in New York City. Then my mom got sick—Code Red sick—and things changed pretty dramatically.

When we created Hero, it was to make people’s lives easier. To help simplify their days. And to give people peace-of-mind. When we hear from customers just how much our intelligent countertop pill dispenser is doing exactly that for them, it makes our work worthwhile.

Recently, we heard from a customer who suffers from a neurological disorder which leaves her dependent on multiple medications. Before Hero, her day would begin with the counting and sorting of her pills. She referred to this process as, “More than a nuisance. It’s a continual reminder of my dependence on pharmaceuticals...It’s not a nice thing to wake up to every day.” That’s when she discovered Hero: A “total game changer” for her.

In fact, she was so overwhelmed by the impact Hero is going to have on her life both practically and emotionally, that she made her own (totally unsolicited!) video of her unboxing and setting up experience.
